the best kind of gifts

The boys were given some really fantastic books for Christmas this year ... a few from a wish list I had given their Nana and a few perfectly picked out surprises. My sister is of course keeping up with her commitment to give a new Christmas book to each boy every year, so we'll slowly build up our collection. Ooooh, I love books! And I know my life is coming back to normal even just a little as I now have an ongoing book on my nightstand these days, as this is something I need to keep me centered and calm and very, very happy. I know I'll never understand people who simply don't read, just as they will never understand the joy and anticipation I feel whenever I pick up a new book. A holiday to me is being curled up with a book. Anywhere. And I love that some of my friends totally get this!

I'm reading Twilight right now, just to try to understand all the fervour and craziness, but - yawn - I'm so bored with it. It's poorly written and I can't make myself like any the main characters even in the slightest so I frankly don't care ... about them or the plot. But I'll plod on. I've only ever not finished two books in my life that I've started and both were a traumatic decision to do so, as it felt like a great betrayal to all books everywhere. I was reminded again of the greatness of The Count of Monte Cristo today and so I'll give that a read soon. That and The Happiest Toddler on the Block, just to balance out my reading interests! I need help though ... at least a few 2010 Must Read suggestions from everyone ... what should I keep on my nightstand this year?

Don't you just hate it when a book is poorly written? I now refuse to finish reading books like that. It is far too painful.

I haven't read the Twilight series, but have wanted to because they are a big deal among kids that are my students' age. If they're that bad, though, I'll put it off a bit. No sense getting frustrated.

When I read your post, I was thrilled to hear of your commitment to read to your kids and hopefully pass on the love of reading to them. My kids are both catching the enjoyment of reading. Amy is reading on her own now, and is often seen in her bed reading Amelia Bedelia! Jeremy loves TinTin, Garfield, and short novels.

The best time of the day, however, is after supper when we sit on the couch and read together. We have been working through the "Little House on the Prairie" series, and have just started "These Happy Golden Years". The kids won't let me stop. YES!!

So, happy reading to you and your little men.

Oh, yes, I can't wait to go through "Little House on the Prairie"! Now there is some fantastic storytelling!

Henry is already a very happy and contented reader, which thrills me endlessly. He'll sit quietly for a long time on his own, just flipping through his books, very thoughtfully, studying each page and pictures. I so hope he continues with that interest.

Walter too, I hope, I hope, he's a bookworm of some degree, though I need to do a much better job of reading to him consistently even now.

We got lots of books for Christmas, also, and I love that!

I'm glad you mentioned what you think of Twilight. I've been debating about reading it, just to know what all the fuss is about. You obviously love well written books, and if you find it boring and poorly written, I'm guessing I would too!

I don't know if you care for fantasy type books, but our older boys got the first two books of the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson for Christmas, and they as well as Jonathan and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. Now to wait for him to finish his next CD, then the next book... :-)
