an open letter to my parents in law

Dear John and Diane,

Well, we've left. Do you notice the silence? The neatness? The empty fridge shelves? You can use the downstairs TV again, walk up the stairs without stepping on little shoes or jackets, eat supper in peace and quiet, see the kitchen counter without bottles, and see the whole living room without any toy at all, imagine that! I think we all did pretty good though, exactly 9 months and 10 days bunking in together. A good generational family experiment. One highchair, two booster seats and a full table of family every night for dinner. It was actually quite fun. And really, really nice for the boys to get to know you so well.

Dad, my funniest moment was when you both came home from a week away and Henry and Walter, just having gotten out of the bath, came barreling through the house buck naked screaming "Grandad!" as they hurtled themselves at you. I haven't seen you laugh that hard in a long time. They had so much fun making themselves at home here, having the whole house and the big backyard to play in and explore. And they just wanted to help as much as they could: watering the garden, emptying the dishwasher, washing the car, setting the table, mixing the batter, moving wet clothes over to the dryer. Mom, what I appreciated the most from you was the time you took to explain everything to the boys, to teach them even when it wasn't meant to be teaching. You had great patience in always taking an extra minute or five to explain the details of a story, or what was the difference was between weeds and plants, how little gadgets worked, or what exactly was for supper. You taught them so much this year and I'm really thankful for that.

When we arrived in March Walter was really only saying "Daddy" and "no". "Mummy" was a surprise in our first few weeks and then "Nana" soon after. "Grandad" was a long time coming but Walter knew he did something special when he finally said it, with a grin and a giggle. We all got through Walter's potty training as well ... amazing to think how far that little guy's come in 9 short months.

Felix was not quite 4 months old when we moved in, not even stable enough to sit up in the bouncy exersaucer. Now he's a year old crawling everywhere, opening cupboards and hoping against all hope that someone would let down the dishwasher so he can slide the trays in and out and pull out anything he can. He comes to Nana with outstretched arms and claps his hands, as he knows that this is the lady who sings Pat-a-cake to him. Felix now randomly peeks around from his corner of the dining room table until he catches Grandad's eye, playing peekaboo in his quiet, funny, just-with-Grandad way.

When we arrived we didn't know how long we would be here but you were just always willing to have us stay as long as we needed. And so thank you for giving up your home, your solitude, your table-for-twos, your cupboard space, and your could-be-quilting-instead time for us. We have all so appreciated being here for as long we needed, that was pretty fabulous of you! Thank you for a fully cared-for 2012 ... and now to a new year with truly a new beginning for all of us. I think we might even miss you but at least we're only an hour down the way. Our living room will be full of toys now ... you can keep yours pretty and ready for company again!

Thank you, for all of us,

Cass

a morgan christmas

As I sat down to eat our fabulous Christmas dinner I realized that I had a perfect shot of the original family from my vantage point ... John and Diane with their three kids Suzanne, John Jr, and Sam. And to that group we've added three spouses and eight grandchildren, though Scott was quite sick this week and so stayed in Vancouver. It was a chaotic house, full of noise and food, but I know that it was all John and Diane wanted for Christmas ... everyone home. We had a bit of just-us time before John and Monica arrived at 10:30am and so we had fun finding all the presents from Santa, tipping out the stockings and playing with the new air hockey game, a perfect size for two little boys. Felix is back to being sick with a cough and runny nose - again, still - but he still had fun getting into everything, getting to know everyone and even trying out the little drum set for himself. I spent Boxing Day up in Nanaimo with my good friend Joy for a long awaited treat of seeing Les Miserables at the theatre, meeting Joy there halfway between Courtenay and Duncan. And now that Christmas is over we have one short crazy day tomorrow before we move for good down to Victoria on Friday. My brother in law Glen is coming over to help Sam with all the heavy lifting and Sam's parents will have the kids to themselves for just over a day while we spend the night alone and set up all we can, without too much interruption. And then Saturday ... back up to get the boys and to bring them to our new house. I'm exhausted already but excited too and really, really looking forward to a brand new year next week with all new beginnings.

feliz navidad

It was Henry's school Christmas concert last night ... occasion enough to wear a fancy sweater, right? The theme of the concert was Around the World and Henry's Preschool class was given Mexico. So they donned their blanket ponchos, wore their homemade sombreros, and sang ever so sweetly Feliz Navidad. Henry sang the loudest and the most earnestly ... he suddenly looked so little up there whereas I see him as so grown up otherwise. I took the boys myself as Sam was gone to Vancouver for a family memorial supper to celebrate his Grandpa Hunter's life, who had just passed away last weekend. Sam (and Nana and Grandad too) was so sorry to miss Henry's song but I took video and pictures throughout, though Henry ended up on the far side of the stage from me and so you have to look carefully to find him. Today was Henry's last day of school as he and Walter will start at a new school in January, with a new set of friends and new teachers. These past few months at Duncan Christian School have been really special for Henry and I know he'll miss this teacher he adores so much. I don't think the boys quite realize what big changes this next move will bring again but we'll quickly get into a routine and get settled in our new little house. I'm excited most of all, for me and for them, to get established in to their new school and to start making a community and friendships there. A school to stay at for a very long time ... I never had that growing up and so I am so very, very thankful to give that to our boys. And I can't wait for next year's Christmas concert, watching our two wee men up there.

it was the great sprinkle hunt

I realized that all of my cookie supplies were packed away (who knew we'd be here til Christmas when I'd need them again?!) so I bought a few cheap cookie cutters to use in place of all my usuals. Sprinkles were missing too, except for the rainbow coloured birthday ones I always have on hand. So I asked Sam to pick up some red and green sugar sprinkles yesterday, little realizing I'd almost asked the impossible! He and Henry and Walter searched through 5 grocery stores til they found them (at Thrifty's in the end, Joy!) though I daresay the boys got quite a kick out of their efforts in the Great Sprinkle Hunt. And so today we decorated and I rather enjoyed myself ... as I was able to leave the boys to their own creations. Sam helped Walter a little in the beginning but even he did great, carrying on the Chambers Christmas tradition of gingerbread cookies with gusto. Both boys hard at work ... with sprinkle-covered fingers!

a simple request

When it came to our next home, all I wanted was a mantle over a fireplace. Sure, I'd love to have an ensuite bathroom and a playroom. A walk in pantry. Or a fenced in yard. But to be honest what I really, really, really wanted was a mantle. Our home in Swift Current didn't have one and I was always sorry for that. Last week my in laws were away in Vancouver and so I used that chance to clear off the dust and the previous birthday party clutter and bring out my very favorite Santa figurine to place on their empty white mantle. And then I squinted my eyes just so and imagined adding in an oversized canvas photo and large sparkly letters spelling J-O-Y plus some holly berries, a few well placed felt trees and a pom-pom garland. Me and that mantle would really rock Christmas.

So wouldn't you know it ... our little rental house ... does not have a fireplace and a mantle above it to decorate year round. I thought for sure that little wish would come true in our searching but alas I will simply have to be patient for awhile yet. What our little rental house does have is a 4 block walk to Sam's work versus an hour long drive now. Ah-mazing. And we are so very, very thankful to have found this little gem. We left Swift Current in March on St Patricks and by New Years Day we will be in the rental house. So it is remarkable that we will have been living with Sam's parents for 9.5 months by then and we are certainly so very grateful to them for having us bunk in with them for almost a year. I know that the boys will honestly miss having their Nana and Grandad at home with them and personally I'm so glad that their relationships have been solidified because of our time together.

My thoughts lately have been focused on preparing for Christmas - only yesterday I was writing out my baking list. And yet in just 3 weeks we are to move again, I can't quite get my head around that yet. Not only the great organizing and effort of moving itself but also the great changes it brings. It's exciting to know that new beginning of the New Year is not just a symbolic event but another new beginning in everything for us. And mantle or not ... it will be fantastic to have a home of our own again. I'll just put Santa on the windowsill next year, beside large sparkly letters spelling J-O-Y.

books make them happy too!

As a surprise after bathtime, I pulled out our basket of Christmas books tonight for the boys. Most of our stash has been from my sister Bethany, as she started with Boy #1 to give him (and then his brothers too) a Christmas book every year. I love this tradition. And I love my sister a wee bit more for thinking of it in the first place. Give me a good book and I'm a happy girl ... and I'm so relieved that so far our children are eager bookworms. So this basket of Christmas books was pretty exciting for them too! I know what we'll be doing lots of tomorrow ...

Also, Christmas jammies on little boys? They look delicious, don't they?

And tonight we scooped up the last bit of baby formula forever. For-ev-er, people. I could dance a jig.

a family affair

The previous first birthdays were all friends and no family. This time we had no friends and all family. It was heartwarming to have both sets of Felix's grandparents here to celebrate his big day ... but yes, I sure missed my friends. Parties and events and coffee dates and any combination of those were a huge part of our girlfriends group in Swift Current. We made sure to mark and celebrate all those big moments together - well, any excuse for coffee or cake or drinks and dinner out, right?! So it's been hard for me lately, knowing that my friends don't even know this little one year old person of mine. The boy they welcomed and celebrated in the beginning. They were missing this time and I felt it sharply as I look around for them a few times throughout the day. I often wonder when the ghosts of the life that was will leave me? ... I can't seem to shake them yet.

But don't misunderstand me, it was wonderful to have the family here. My parents had arrived a few days early for a long overdue visit and it was a big deal for Henry and Walter to wake up every morning and realize that Grandma and Frampa (no, not a misspelling ... that is what Walter calls his Grandpa!) were here for another day! My sister, Glen and the girls came over for Party Day and I know just having all five grandkids together was a highlight for everyone. It is so nice to have cousins their age for my boys to grow up with, I know I've said that before. Isla and Henry are little twins, Walter and Eden simply adore each other, and little Felix was just basking in everyone's attention, happy prince that he is. My Gramma came out too, bearing gifts of books for all the littles and promptly reading them all as requested. And then of course Nana and Grandad were here, taking in their second Cass-party in 2 months! The rainbow cake was a surprise for most everyone, the balloons of course were the funnest toy out of everything, and the kids would not all smile on cue for the group photos as much as we tried. Funny that. But it was a great party, just as Felix deserved. Little happy prince that he is.
