When it came to our next home, all I wanted was a mantle over a fireplace. Sure, I'd love to have an ensuite bathroom and a playroom. A walk in pantry. Or a fenced in yard. But to be honest what I really, really, really wanted was a mantle. Our home in Swift Current didn't have one and I was always sorry for that. Last week my in laws were away in Vancouver and so I used that chance to clear off the dust and the previous birthday party clutter and bring out my very favorite Santa figurine to place on their empty white mantle. And then I squinted my eyes just so and imagined adding in an oversized canvas photo and large sparkly letters spelling J-O-Y plus some holly berries, a few well placed felt trees and a pom-pom garland. Me and that mantle would really rock Christmas.
So wouldn't you know it ... our little rental house ... does not have a fireplace and a mantle above it to decorate year round. I thought for sure that little wish would come true in our searching but alas I will simply have to be patient for awhile yet. What our little rental house does have is a 4 block walk to Sam's work versus an hour long drive now. Ah-mazing. And we are so very, very thankful to have found this little gem. We left Swift Current in March on St Patricks and by New Years Day we will be in the rental house. So it is remarkable that we will have been living with Sam's parents for 9.5 months by then and we are certainly so very grateful to them for having us bunk in with them for almost a year. I know that the boys will honestly miss having their Nana and Grandad at home with them and personally I'm so glad that their relationships have been solidified because of our time together.
My thoughts lately have been focused on preparing for Christmas - only yesterday I was writing out my baking list. And yet in just 3 weeks we are to move again, I can't quite get my head around that yet. Not only the great organizing and effort of moving itself but also the great changes it brings. It's exciting to know that new beginning of the New Year is not just a symbolic event but another new beginning in everything for us. And mantle or not ... it will be fantastic to have a home of our own again. I'll just put Santa on the windowsill next year, beside large sparkly letters spelling J-O-Y.

Keep dreaming, Cass, and one day you'll have that mantle! In the meantime, I think Santa on the windowsill will be lovely. And so will that 4-block walk to Sam's work and the fact that we'll be living in the same town and can go for Starbucks together often!
Happy Holidays!

PS: I got your card and those fabulous candy bags on Thursday. Thank you! I love them.
I totally get this! We have lived in our small little ranch house for over 11 yrs now and I always thought it would be a place we'd live just a couple yrs before we moved on to something bigger and better.
We have no fireplace, no mantle, no charming architecture, no front porch, so many things I always wanted in a home and yet here we still are in our simple, cookie-cutter-cutout-plain-ol-boring-ranch-style house.
We do however have one of those fake fireplaces and though it's not the real thing I have enjoyed decorating THAT mantle for now.
And I've also come to realize that I truly DO love this home. We have a fantastic yard, it's not too big so that cleaning is overwhelming, it's a mile from hubby's work, etc.
So I'm learning contentment ... and maybe we'll be here another 11 yrs and I'll just learn to live without those unique architechtural details I've always dreamed of ...
=)
PS. can't wait to see pics once you get things all moved in and set up!
Love, Kathy
The journey continues! Glad D-town will be just a short drive instead of so far like it used to be when you left. I know your decorate and make your new nest 'home' once again.
